DoD Technology Outreach Center
The primary purposes of the Outreach Center are to:
- Showcase examples of DoD technology, items and equipment that have the potential to enhance public safety and improve homeland security.
- Describe how such technology items and equipment can be useful to First Responders.
- Communicate with First Responders and facilitate awareness of available DoD technology, items and equipment available to enhance their capabilities.
Robotics and Other Department of Defense (DoD) Technologies for First Responders
Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) Systems Center Pacific’s (SSC Pacific) Unmanned Systems Branch, located in San Diego, CA, has partnered with the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and Americas’ Security Affairs (1401 Technology Transfer Program) and the Public Safety Academy (PSA) of Northeast Indiana, Fort Wayne, to provide First Responders information about cutting edge technology and support programs available through DoD. The DoD Technology Outreach Center at PSA will provide training, hands-on demonstrations and general technical support for robotics and other technologies to the first responder communities in and around Fort Wayne.
Robotic Systems Pool
SSC Pacific was selected to manage the Outreach Center after six years of successful management of the Joint Ground Robotics Enterprise’s (JGRE) Robotic Systems Pool (RSP). The RSP was created in cooperation with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the JGRE in 2002. Since then, the RSP has provided commercial and specialized advanced robotics capabilities to our warfighters and first responder agencies. In exchange for this no-cost service, the users provide feedback on the effectiveness of the robotic assets in actual field settings. The user feedback is incorporated into the continuous spiral development process, furthering the enhancement and advanced development of next-generation fielded robotics.
Additional Technologies
In addition to robotics, the Outreach Center has a variety of other DoD developed technologies that may be of interest to the First Responder community. These include:
- Night vision devices
- Hand-held language translators
- Advanced first aid dressings
- Personal chemical detectors
- Personal decontamination kits
Information, demonstrations and loans of night vision devices are also available through the Outreach Center.
