Citizen's Police Academy
The Fort Wayne Police Department has found that education has been most effective in gaining understanding and support from the community. Through implementation of the Citizens Police Academy, the FWPD offers citizens new insights into how police officers perform their duties, as well as how the department serves the community. The success of any police agency depends largely upon the amount of cooperation and support it receives from the citizens it serves.
As part of a continuing effort to develop citizen's awareness and an understanding of the role of law enforcement, the Fort Wayne Police Department has created a police academy course for citizens of all backgrounds and occupations.
The Citizen's Police Academy consists of ten classes held one evening a week. The instruction is comprehensive, covering a different area of the FWPD each week. Certified police officers, supervisors, and civilian instructors with particular expertise will conduct each topic. Students will be actively involved in many interesting activities such as; touring the police facilities, using police equipment, and instruction on collecting crime scene evidence. By attend class, you will be better informed and have a greater insight into police practices and services. The next Citizen's Police Academy will start on Tuesday, September 9, 2008, from 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
The citizens Police Academy is open to citizens who live in Allen County, are 18 years of age or older, have no felony convictions, committed to attending all classes, and have an interest in learning about their police department.
Each applicant must complete an application form that is available from the Fort Wayne Police Training Center, located at 7602 Patriot Crossing, Fort Wayne, IN 46816. Telephone 260/427-1240. For additional information please call 260/427-1240.
